I remember the SFBay Area had only channel's 2-4-5-7-9-13 and that was it except when the perfect 36 came on UHF
One station signed off with the poem "High Flight" another with the Righteous Brothers singing Peace Brother Peace

I remember Kansas City, Mo in the early 70's when all we had were channels 4, 5, 9, and uhf 19 (pbs). Then in 1973 or so, they got an independence station KSHB 41.

After 1981, I didn't care what else was on television because my motto was "I want my MTV!!"
